For $400k you get started on independence with  the entry level system of 5 220 watt solar panels, 10Kw grid tie inverter, racks , installation.


This system  can generate 1100 watts, or about 10 kwh per day, 300 kwh per month of sunny days.
Thats almost twice what a low end user needs, so you can sell back to JPS with their net billing allowance (although for your bill to be zero, you'll have to produce  40% more than you use, since they buy at US  19 cents per kilowatt hour and sell at 35)

The inverter is 10kw, so you can easily invest by adding 40 more panels, if you have the space, and be an actual entrepreneur (40 panels cost about $1.3 mil, generating $500k per year)

What's more I can help get you a bank loan (DBJ) with low interest rates that will ensure you pay less per watt than what JPS charges. Just prepare 3 random bills from the previous year, and we'll find a lower overall  payment rate depending on the term of repayment.
If you pay upfront, you make back your money in less than 3 years and then you free, clear and making off like a bandit (panels should last up to 25 years)

depends on your needs (how many watts to use, days to last), and on the type of battery ah (amp hour). To store the entire amount of energy the system produces in 10 hours of sunshine, you'd need about 11 100ah 12v batteries which would last 10 hours  releasing 10 kwh  , 20 hours at 5 kwhs  , 40 hours at 2.5 kwh  etc. One of these batteries would last 8 hours at 2.5 kwh = 312w per hour

Great response, scientific. Want to reduce jps (*and eventually replace) by using solar system robust enough to run fridge, uwave (40min/day), 2 or 3 high draw devices, and enough battery storage to last the night (things u can't turn off). Need bit of advice on the matter like should I use 12 or 24v system, grid tie, independent, generator charging the bank in the system, etc. And are these things do-able in stages?

well for big draw from batteries, it is more efficient to use 24 v system, as the more you draw from small batteries, the less overall energy you get than what they claim. But the controller, cables and batteries will be more expensive. You can have a hybrid system that charges your battery first then put the excess on the grid. Grid tie alone mean JPS charges you for using their electricity at ful price (at night), while you sell them at 2/3rds price (day), while battery alone mean excess energy completely wasted
