Michael Jackson, the show-stopping singer whose best-selling albums -- including Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad -- and electrifying stage presence made him one of the most popular artists of all time, died Thursday, CNN has confirmed.

He was 50.

He collapsed at his residence in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles, California, about noon Pacific time, suffering cardiac arrest, according to brother Randy Jackson. He died at UCLA Medical Center.

Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy would probably be done on the singer Friday, with results expected that afternoon. Watch crowds gather at Jackson’s hospital »

“Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of color,” the Rev. Al Sharpton said. “To say an ‘icon’ would only give these young people in Harlem a fraction of what he was. He was a historic figure that people will measure music and the industry by.”

Jackson’s blazing rise to stardom — and later fall from grace — is among the most startling of show business tales. The son of a steelworker, he rose to fame as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, a band he formed with his brothers in the late 1960s. By the late ’70s, as a solo artist, he was topping the charts with cuts from “Off the Wall,” including “Rock With You” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” Watch Jackson perform at a 1988 concert »

In 1982, he released “Thriller,” an album that eventually produced seven hit singles. An appearance the next year on a Motown Records 25th-anniversary special cemented his status as the biggest star in the country. Timeline: The life of Michael Jackson »

For the rest of the 1980s, they came no bigger. “Thriller’s” follow-up, 1987’s “Bad,” sold almost as many copies. A new Jackson album — a new Jackson appearance — was a pop culture event. iReport: Share your memories of Michael Jackson

Paul and Patrick Gaynor, more popularly known as the dancehall duo, Twin of Twins, were yesterday taken into custody by the Half-Way Tree police on reasonable suspicion of fraud.

The brothers are accused of taking $50,000 from an upcoming artiste, under the guise that they were able to give him the opportunity to travel to the United States of America to perform.

It is alleged, however, that they failed to deliver on their promise and subsequently refused to return the complainant’s money. The act is alleged to have taken place earlier this year and was reported to the police in February.

The brothers were arrested yesterday along Half-Way Tree Road and are now in custody awaiting an interview.

The duo are known for their comedic routines featuring witty social commentary and jabs at popular figures in the entertainment and political worlds. Their latest release, Trial and Crosses, has been getting rave reviews from fans.

Deadly cellphone fight

Really Sad to read about something like this, more so that it resulted in the death of a student. Back in my school days, one would never imagine the day when a cell phone would be allowed in schools, to the point where ‘every’ student has a cell phone, yeah its convenient, but something like this should be done in moderation, and them beyond that, seems every student has a knife now :-((

Jamaica Importing Beef Patties?

Heard on the news that various companies were given the OK to import frozen beef patties into Jamaica ;-( I’m not saying this is odd, but on the reals, the beef patty is one of the many trademarks of Jamaica, and i honestly think importing it into the country is rather ridiculous in some aspects. Here is an Article on the matter from the Jamaica Gleaner.

Gov’t rejects JMA’s patty concerns
Published: Thursday | June 25, 2009

The Government has dismissed concerns raised yesterday by the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) about the importation of frozen patties, arguing there was nothing illegal about persons engaging in such trade.

“What we can do is lament the fact that patties are brought in here on a competitive basis but we can’t prevent people from importing anything into Jamaica,” said Karl Samuda, minister of industry, investment and commerce. “We can’t stop it because we are an open market.”

Samuda was responding to alarms raised by the JMA about imported frozen patties out of the United States being sold by a Corporate Area supermarket.

The JMA had raised the issue at its annual general meeting yesterday morning.

“There is Juici Beef, there is Tastee Patties producing and Jamaicans are purchasing imported patties and I find this totally ridiculous,” said Omar Azan, re-elected president of the JMA.

Granny abuses child for stealing credit?

A 65-year-old woman was slapped with criminal charges following the beating of her 12-year-old grandson, who allegedly stole credit from her phone.

The incident happened in Cross Keys, Manchester.

According to the Area Three police, the information they have so far received suggests that the child was beaten after he is said to have transferred $200 worth of credit from the woman’s cellphone to his girlfriend’s cellphone.

The grandmother was charged with assault and cruelty to a child on Wednesday.

“So far, what we have is that the boy was beaten after he stole some credit from his grandmother’s cellphone and sent it to his girlfriend. That is actually what he said. He had bruises all over his boy and he also had an injury to his head,” Inspector Martin Howell of the Area Three Police Division told THE STAR.

Single mother loses against RIAA, has to pay $2.4m

A US jury has ordered a 32-year-old woman to pay $US1.92 million ($A2.4 million) in damages for illegally downloading 24 songs in a high-profile digital piracy case.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a single mother of four from the US state of Minnesota, was found liable for using the Kazaa peer-to-peer file-sharing network to download the songs over the internet.

The jury took just under five hours to reach its verdict.

It ordered Thomas-Rasset to pay $US1.92 million dollars - or $US80,000 ($A100,000) per song - to six record companies: Capitol Records, Sony BMG Music, Arista Records, Interscope Records, Warner Bros. Records and UMG Recordings.

Thomas-Rasset had been convicted previously, in October 2007, and ordered to pay $US220,000 ($A275,000) in damages but the judge who presided over that trial threw out the verdict calling it “wholly disproportionate” and “oppressive”.

The Recording Industry Association of America and major music labels have brought suit against thousands of people for illegally downloading and sharing music, with most agreeing to settlements of between $3000 and $5000.
