“I am delighted to win this prestigious award and would like to thank everyone who voted for me,” said Bolt, who performed his trademark celebration, a lightning-like gesture with his arms.

“It is an honour to succeed such greats as multiple winner Roger Federer, Michael Schumacher, Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods.”

He received the award from Laureus World Sports Academy member Michael Johnson, who set the previous record in the 200m (19.32secs) at the 1996 Olympics.

Howard Walker | Monday, June 08, 2009

A disappointed John Barnes has been replaced by Theodore Whitmore as head coach after his seven-month contract was not renewed by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), it was announced after Jamaica’s 3-2 win over Panama at the National Stadium last night.

Barnes, 45, who took over the coaching reins on November 1, 2008, will instead be moving on to English League One outfit Tranmere Rovers.

His contract with Tranmere will start in July and Barnes was visibly upset that his contract with the Jamaica Football Federation wasn’t extended to the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Said Barnes: “Yes, I am disappointed that I would not be going to the Gold Cup because I could have started the contract (with Tranmere) after the
Gold Cup.”

“But I fully accept and understand the JFF decision that they will appoint Theodore, as of now, to give him a chance to experience football at the highest level.

“I have to thank the JFF for giving me an opportunity in doing something I love. It is something I wanted to get involved with for a long time and they gave me that opportunity,” Barnes added.

The JFF president, Captain Horace Burrell, made the announcement after the game last night and wished Barnes all the best.

Said Burrell: “Our contract with Coach Barnes expires at the end of June, which is in another couple of days from now. Naturally, Coach Barnes has to be looking around, and I am very pleased that Barnes has indeed landed a contract at Tranmere Rovers in England.

“As a result of this, the JFF has immediately appointed Theodore Whitmore as head coach of the Reggae Boyz team, and this will go for one year,” said Burrell.

LONDON, England (CMC) - Chris Gayle smashed a typically belligerent 88 from 50 balls to earn the Man-of-the-Match award and lead West Indies to a convincing seven-wicket victory over Australia in the ICC World Twenty20 Championship yesterday.

The West Indies captain blasted six fours and six sixes, and Andre Fletcher 53 off 32 balls, as West Indies successfully chased 170 for victory in the third match of the competition at The Oval.

Gayle shared an opening stand of 133 from 71 balls with Fletcher that put West Indies firmly on the path for victory.

Fletcher hit seven fours and one six in 53 from 32 balls in a record stand of 133 with the Gayle.

But Fletcher, Gayle, and Xavier Marshall were all dismissed before Ramnaresh Sarwan steered Mitchell Johnson to third man for his second four to formalise the result with 25 balls to spare.

The victory put West Indies on top of the Group C table with two points, but they more importantly have a healthy net run rate of +2.65 which will be a boost if the results from the other two matches in the group are unfavourable.

Australia face Sri Lanka on Monday before West Indies meet the Sri Lankans in the final group match on Wednesday at Trent Bridge.

Gayle gave an immediate indication of his intentions, when he leant into the first delivery of the West Indies’ jaunt from Brett Lee, and stroked it languidly through mid-off for four.
